8 April, TASHKENT – A workshop was held today for teachers at the Supreme School of Judges under the Supreme Judicial Council of Uzbekistan, on incorporating case studies into training to enhance the qualifications of judges and candidates for judge positions. This event was organized by the ‘Rule of Law Partnership in Uzbekistan’ joint project of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, USAID and UNDP.

The case study method is an approach to training based on studying and analysing situations which might appear during the practical application of theoretical knowledge being taught. Discussions about real or hypothetical cases relevant to a training’s focus can help improve students’ understanding of concepts being put forward.

Today’s workshop sought to refine teacher’s skills in developing case studies as effective teaching aids for specialized, competency-based training programmes, thereby encouraging their introduction into the curriculum of the Supreme School of Judges.

The leaders of this workshop presented an overview of the case study methodology, the specific nature of this approach, and how it can be applied in classrooms. They outlined the stages involved in presenting a case study in a training programme and the associated teaching language.

They also broke down the classification of case studies by type depending on learning objectives, the methods used to develop a case study ahead of a training, and how to select relevant information for their formulation.
