May 14, 2020, Tashkent – In cooperation with the Senate and the Ministry of Makhalla and Family Affairs we ran an online seminar dedicated to problems related to the ensuring of gender equality in Uzbekistan.

The online seminar was attended by the members of the Senate’s Committee on Women and Gender Equality, Commission on Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan and qualified trainers, senior officials of the upper house of parliament chancery. The main topic of the discussion was the new Regulation “On Conducting Gender Expertise of Normative Legal Acts and Draft laws”, recently approved by the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The regulation stipulates that drafts of normative legal acts and existing laws shall be subject to gender-based legal expertise, which will serve the purpose of ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women and men. The seminar provided clarification on conformity of the draft legal document including the ways how the gender-legal examination should be carried out in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The Law “On guaranteeing equal rights and opportunities for women and men” was adopted in September, 2019, as well as other laws regulating issues on improving gender balance in the country.

Our project aims to continue its support in strengthening legal, analytical, statistical and policy capacity to empower women to effectively participate in the socio-economic life and public administration, protect rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of women and ensure full implementation of human rights.
