30 May  2020, Tashkent - In the context of the global crisis caused by the pandemic, when most industries are sustaining loss, people engaged into agriculture are trying their best to satisfy domestic needs in agricultural products supply. The governments are taking all the necessary measures so that farmers can timely produce, harvest and deliver the crops to the consumers.

Within the framework of the UNDP/CCI joint project “Enhancing the Adaptation and Strengthening the Resilience of Farming to Climate Change Risks in Fergana Valley”implemented with the financial support of the Russian Federation, for the second year in row we're working on introducing best agricultural practices, including expanding opportunities and increasing adaptive potential, applying environmentally friendly production methods and innovative technologies among agricultural producers of Andijan, Namangan and Ferghana regions.

On 27 May the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan Mr Adkham Ilkhamovich Ikramov, the Minister of Agriculture Mr Jamshid Abdukhakimovich Khodjaev, and the Chairman of the Council of Farming and Peasant Enterprises, and Owners of Garden Plots of Uzbekistan Mr Khaitov Aktam Akhmadovich visited Kuva district, Ferghana Region and got acquainted with the project activities on introducing best practices in the region.

Kuva district is one of our pilot districts, where in the framework of the project one of 9 agrometeorological stations were installed for provision of services to farmers. During the visit, the guests learnt more about agrometeorological stations operation  and the ongoing work on creation of the unified system for forecasting and controlling the spread of plant pests and diseases. This system will enable establishing continuous sunergy between specialists and farmers, thus reducing the time to receive information and take timely measures to protect the crop.

During the visit, the guests also shared their views and recommendations for successful achievement of project key results and goals, as well as ensuring the sustainability of the initiatives being implemented. So, for example, attracting specialists from the Council of Farmers and Uzagrokhimzashchitka and establishing cooperation between experts and users of services will help identify problems of the farmers and find their solutions. It was also proposed to collect and analyze comparative data, which will allow comparing the volume of production and the share of exports for the previous and subsequent years to help determine the efficiency of the measures taken.

The visit turned out to be very productive. The parties exchanged views and plans for further cooperation aimed at modernizing the agricultural sector, increasing the potential and expanding the capabilities of agricultural producers, not only in the Ferghana Valley, but throughout the Republic.

UNDP activities in modernization and intensive development of agriculture are carried out in accordance with the Uzbekistan’s Development Strategy for 2017-2021, as well as part of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN member countries.
