Technovation Challenge Uzbekistan 2017 - Girls for a change!

Worldwide Information Technologies sector is undergoing a rapid growth, and often demand for qualified personnel in the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) far outnumbers supply. In addition, gender imbalances in STEM sectors remains relatively high. For example, women comprise no more than 26% of the workforce in STEM industries in developed countries.

UNDP project "E-government Promotion for Improved Public Service Delivery" jointly with the Association of support of children and families in Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Development of Information Technologies and Communications of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other partners launched Technovation Challenge in order to increase interest and skills of girls in STEM areas. Technovation Challenge in Uzbekistan aims at promoting social adaptation of girls, skills development in IT and entrepreneurship, improving competitiveness of women in labor market.

On February 4, 2017 the programme was launched at the Palace of Youth Creativity that brought together over 200 people, including young participants, their parents, mentors and tutors. At the event, the program organizers presented the main objectives, terms and conditions and agenda of the competition. Furthermore, taking into account that Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) have been identified as a theme of the contest in 2017, Matluba Umurzakova from the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Uzbekistan has made a presentation on what are the SDGs and the role of each individual in achieving these goals.

The program will be implemented from January to May and training session will last for 12 weeks, during which seminars and trainings from experts in programming, business and innovation, marketing, design-thinking, leadership, presentation and pitches are planned. During the program teams will develop business projects, and the jury will select the winners. A team which elaborates a project using open government data, will be rewarded a special prize from the UNDP.
