Gender composition of the judicial community in Uzbekistan 2019-2020

Sep 9, 2021

One of the recommendations of the UN human rights bodies regarding Uzbekistan is to increase the representation of women in the judiciary.  Another of the most common recommendations is to ensure the collection of sex-disaggregated statistics. Most importantly, it was mentioned in the latest report of the Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, which examines the current status of women’s representation in judicial systems. Considering this, the ‘Rule of Law Partnership in Uzbekistan’ project in order to integrate a gender perspective into statistics of the Supreme court prepared reports on “Gender composition of the judicial community in Uzbekistan 2019” and “Gender composition of the judicial community in Uzbekistan 2020”

The reports aim to give an idea of the ratio of women and men in the judicial system, in particular, to determine the level of representation of women in the judiciary, which, in turn, is expected to contribute to the implementation of the recommendations of the UN human rights bodies, and therefore to more effective implementation of relevant international obligations the Republic of Uzbekistan.

This analysis can contribute to the development of new recommendations not only to improve the status of women but also the justice system as a whole.
