World Water Day Celebrated in Uzbekistan

From March 16-22 the joint project of EU and United Nations Development Programme 'Technical Capacity Building’ of the European Union’s Sustainable Water Management in Uzbekistan’s Rural Areas Programme organized awareness raising events to celebrate the World Water Day.

The World Water Day is celebrated worldwide to take an action to tackle the water crisis and raise public awareness on water supply, environmental protection, potable water and global water resources. The idea of observing this Day was first voiced in 1992, when Rio de Janeiro hosted the UN’s Environment and Development Conference. On 22 February 1993, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 47/193 which declared 22 March the World Water Day.

The Government of Uzbekistan has made extensive efforts to  promote efficient water management practices. The country has been celebrating the World Water Day annually through the collective efforts of  the  national parliament, ministries, academia, and international organizations working in agriculture and water management sectors.

This year, the awareness raising events enabled to engage more organizations and discuss matters of rational water management, highlight importance of сcompetency and professionalism in managing of water resources as well as to contribute to shaping of culture of   mindful attitudes of the population, regarding problems of water scarcity.   The events also provided an opportunity to build a dialogue amongst students, young specialists working in agricultural and water management sectors of Uzbekistan. As part of World Water Day celebrations, organizers conducted an outreach event for over 100 students of Yunosobod Academic Lyceum under the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration to enhance their knowledge about importance of the water and its role  in development of the country.

To promote a better awareness of efficient water management techniques among the students, organizers conducted debates with the students of Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration and Uzbek National University These debates were evaluated by the representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and other relevant organizations. The winning groups were awarded with certificates.

In addition, achievements in the field of water resources were displayed during the exhibition organized as part of celebrations of the World Water Day. The exhibition provided the opportunity to showcase the existing drip watering technologies and water capacity measuring equipment in the country. Wrap up event of the celebration was a ceremony where prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners of the contests in such categories as the best research article, best video, best banner as well as a special prize for the audience choice. Also, certificates were awarded to the best paintings among lyceum students and university student groups, who won the debates contest.

The outreach events were organized in close cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of Uzbekistan, Legislative Chamber the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Melioration, educational institutions and international organizations.
