Tashkent region media representatives acquaint with open data

A training seminar on “Open data section on official websites of government bodies and using the open data portal” was held at the “Poytakht” business center. It was organized by Tashkent regional khokimiyat in cooperation with UNDP “Local Government Support Programme /Phase 2” project.

The event was attended by over 20 TV and radio journalists as well as editors and correspondents of news agencies, print and electronic media in Tashkent region.

The seminar aimed to transfer knowledge and experience on modern approaches of media coverage, training to work with open data, data processing and visualization for creating information products, demanded by society.

Zukhriddin Shodmonov, the head of department of the «E-Government» system development center under the Ministry for development of information technologies and communications of the Republic of Uzbekistan, opened the meeting with the presentation on “Open data portal: goals and objectives”. As he noted, open data is information about the activities of government departments and local government bodies, which is available on the Internet in machine-readable format. It can be freely used for any legal purposes.

Also mentioned that public disclosure of data contributes to the transparency of government and local government bodies, which is harmonious with the spirit of ongoing system reforms in Uzbekistan, directed at building a democratic state and a strong civil society.

It should be noted that Data.gov.uz open data portal, launched in accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan from August 7, 2015 of #232 “On measures for further enhancement of the governmental Portal of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the Internet taking into account provision of open data”, intends to serve as a common platform for the storage of open data of state bodies in machine-readable format.

A trainer of the seminar Lola Islamova, editor in chief of the information-analytical news site anhor.uz, acquainted participants with practical skills on development and support of advanced data visualization tools, using charts, pivot tables, infographics, the main task of which is to make difficult to perceive information easily understandable. At the same time, she introduced visualization techniques and principles.

In her opinion, the value of data visualization is that it often allows clearly and concisely identify and demonstrate information, contained in the dataset. you can instantly demonstrate information in a graphic, which will take not a single paragraph in text. L.Islamova also told in detail about the essence of “Data journalism”, its legal basics and work tools.

Journalists were also presented a new open data portal of the Tashkent regional khokimiyat (data.toshvil.uz), where about 250 datasets in economic development, education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, culture and in other spheres are made available.

On the basis of learned materials the participants, working in teams and using open data, prepared information materials in the dynamic visual format.
