UN, Uzbekistan sign UNDAF for 2016-2020

Sep 16, 2015

On 9 June 2015, the UN Office in Uzbekistan and the Government of Uzbekistan signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for 2016-2020. To highlight this milestone event, on 16 September 2015, the UN Office in Uzbekistan will hold an official ceremony to launch the UNDAF and announce the start of a new phase of cooperation between the UN and Uzbekistan.

The new UNDAF is guided by the Government’s people-centred development vision “to build an open democratic and law-governed state with a stable developing economy”. The focus on people-centred development is in line with the UN’s central development paradigms, in particular human development and human rights, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and their post-2015 successor, the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 25-27 September 2015.

The UNDAF program focuses on the following thematic areas determined by the UN Office in Uzbekistan in collaboration with national partners:

  • Inclusive economic development, with a focus on employment and social protection
  • Quality health and education, to fully realize human potential
  • Environmental protection, to ensure sustainable development
  • Effective governance, to enhance public service delivery and the protection of rights

The thematic areas of UNDAF have been closely aligned with and are expected to contribute to the implementation of Uzbekistan’s development priorities reflected in state programmes and strategies with specific focus on disadvantaged social and economic groups and further addressing remaining disparities.

The launch ceremony will include a brief presentation that will focus on the strategy, priority areas and implementation of and funding for the 2016-2020 UNDAF.

Those gathered will then have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session with UN and Uzbek Government representatives.

The UN has been present in Uzbekistan since 1993 with the aim to assist the Government in implementing the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF providing support in the achievement of national development strategies and international development goals. Presently, there are 12 UN agencies operating in Uzbekistan.
