UN Special Adviser visited UzbekistanJun 8, 2018
Mr. Yukio Takasu, the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General for Human Security, visited Uzbekistan to attend the Central Asian International Environmental Forum: "Strengthening cooperation in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development" (June 5-8) and the International Conference: "Joint actions to mitigate the consequences of the Aral catastrophe: new approaches, innovative solutions, investments" (June 8).
The purpose of the Environmental forum was to intensify efforts of the countries of the Central Asian region to solve environmental problems to address issues of biodiversity conservation and development of a network of protected natural areas, integrated management of solid domestic waste, introduction of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency.
During the Aral Sea Conference, a special focus was given to the programmes aiming to mitigate the consequences of the Aral catastrophe in a coherent way and with concerted efforts in implementation of the projects targeting improvement of the environmental and socio-economic situation in the region.
Mr. Yukio Takasu also visited Karakalpakstan to see on the ground ecological situation.
- We’ve achieved great results, but we need to scale up the human security approach and coordinate efforts of all partners to support the affected communities. Thus the Muli-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region administrated by the UNDP is about to be launched. I would like to extand my appeal to all donors and international partners to consider positively joining this Multi-Partner Trust Fund.
To discuss partnership opportunities within the Muli-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region, Mr. Takasu has held number of meetings with national and international partners inclduing with Mr. Botir Khodjaev, Minister of Economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Ravshan Gulyamov, Chairman of the State Committee for assistance to privatized enterprises and development of competition of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Olivier Chave, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation, Mr. Nobuaki Ito, Ambassador of Japan, Mr. Kwon Yongwoo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Radoslaw Darski, Counsellor to the EU Delegation in Uzbekistan and Mr. Serdar Jepbarov, Senior Officer of the World Bank.
Mr. Takasu noted that coordinated and concerted efforts are imprortant in the process of establishment of the UN Multi Partner Human Security Trust Fund on the Aral Sea region, where commitment of the Government of Uzbekistan plays a vital role.
