On 9-11 July 2014 UNDP/UNV Project ‘Social Innovation and Volunteerism in Uzbekistan’ is planning to organize the 'Garbage Lab’ – Social Innovation Laboratory on creative thinking.

Promoting social innovation and volunteerism in the country, offering innovative solutions to social problems, and generating interaction between different people and various organizations is an effective way to contribute to Uzbekistan’s prosperity. This time the UNDP/UNV Project ‘Social Innovation and Volunteerism in Uzbekistan’ is launching a new initiative – ‘Garbage Lab’, a three day social innovation laboratory on creative thinking.

This laboratory will help participants to gain useful knowledge and skills on how to make useful things creatively from improvised, broken or unused materials, which may pack the closets of a house or are thrown away as useless. Through the guidance of laboratory organizers, the event’s organizers want to have an influence on people’s decision to throw away things which could otherwise be recycled and remain useful for the society.

One of the principal goals of the event is to demonstrate opportunities of applying a similar method in solving social problems. This consists mainly of developing innovative solutions through establishing partnership between organizations, communities and society, and achieving synergy in activities directed towards solving social problems.

Volunteers of all ages, who are offering simple, innovative concepts which can meet the needs of both specific groups and society as a whole, and aim to develop creative methods and social initiatives in Uzbekistan, will be participating in the laboratory event. Representatives of NGOs and young people with disabilities will also take part.

Since the project began organizing the lab on creative thinking, it announced a collection of improvised and unused things, and received significant contributions from project staff. More information about the initiative can be found at the following website: http://www.iact.uz/news/sbor-hlama-dlya-garbage-lab. Those who wish to participate in the social innovation laboratory on creative thinking should register on the following site: http://www.iact.uz/news/priglashaem-vas-k-uchastiyu-v-garbage-lab.

Within the framework of the ‘Garbage Lab’, participants in the laboratory on creative thinking will obtain new knowledge and skills related to design thinking, so they can act as innovators contributing to the development of society.
