On Wednesday the 25th of September, 2013, representatives of Sasol, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Uzbekistan (CCI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will meet in Tashkent to launch a partnership supporting community development in Uzbekistan through inclusive business models.

Through this partnership, Sasol will contribute funding to support the sustainability of three development initiatives undertaken by the joint UNDP-CCI ‘Business Forum of Uzbekistan – Phase II’ project since January 2011. These initiatives have demonstrated how entrepreneurs and small businesses, using inclusive business models, receiving financial support and working in direct partnership with beneficiaries, can accelerate local development.

The financial assistance provided by will support the expansion of three targeted inclusive businesses. Sasol’s assistance will firstly increase the number of workplaces available at a social enterprise in the Khorezm region that teaches traditional handicraft techniques and provides jobs for previously-unemployed women.  Secondly, these initiatives will help establish a milk collection centre in the Tashkent region, modelled after a similar operation in the Namangan region that will purchase the milk of local farmers and households and provide them with a constant source of income. Last but not least, the initiative will help a waste management company in the Tashkent region to improve the quality of solid waste collection services provided to social sector institutions, ensuring the cleanliness of its premises and reducing negative impacts on the health of its community.

Future cooperation and coordination between Sasol, CCI and UNDP will support the continued adoption of inclusive business models throughout Uzbekistan, assist entrepreneurs in supporting community development, and expand alternative income sources for vulnerable population groups in rural areas. This partnership serves as an example of how the private sector can be involved in creating new jobs, and in ensuring the speedy achievement of the eight Millennium Development Goals by the 2015 deadline.

The partnership launch held on the 25th of September will be attended by Sasol’s Executive Maurice Radebe, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan Alisher Shaykhov, and UNDP Resident Representative Stefan Priesner.
