EcoWeek 2013: Reporting on Water Recycling in Industry and AgricultureMay 6, 2013
The effective water reuse and recycling systems used at Samarkand are good examples of how water management can be implemented in Uzbekistan.
From the 29th to the 30th of May, journalists from Tashkent and various regions of Uzbekistan visited a number of sites where best water management technologies and methods have been applied.
After visiting the UNDP project working to integrate water management and water efficiency approaches in the Zarafshan River Basin, the participants toured the ‘GV MAN’ Auto-Uzbekistan’ and ‘SamAvto’ automobile companies to learn how they are utilising water recycling and treatment systems.
In addition to carefully managing their water use, both companies have recognised the impact their production processes have on the environment, and have carefully designed their plants in order minimise their footprint.
Each year EcoWeek commemorates World Environment Day in Uzbekistan, and this year’s event has been implemented by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), in partnership with the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The EU-funded project 'Targeted Awareness Raising for Enhanced Partnership between European Union and Central Asia' (AWARE), conducted through CAREC, has enhanced water management approaches in Samarkand and around Uzbekistan.
It has encouraged the use of recycled water, raised awareness of practical management practices such as Shared Environmental Information Systems, and ensured the public sector’s involvement in raising awareness of the importance of sustainable consumption, production and energy efficiency, as important components for public-private partnerships.
