    UNDP presented “Innovation for Development” approach at the First Tashkent International Innovation Forum

    UNDP Resident Representative, Stefan Priesner, presented innovation as one of the approaches to development issues at the First Tashkent International Innovation Forum in the framework of annually organized 8th Fair of Innovative Ideas, Technologies and Projects held May 19-21. The Forum is organized by the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and is an opportunity for practitioners, youth and scholars to explore global trends in the development of national innovation systems, current problems and prospects in the process of innovative development as well as best practices for addressing these issues.

    Regulatory Impact Assessment for modernization of lawmaking and rulemaking

    The Institute for Monitoring of Current Legislation under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme in Uzbekistan within jointly implemented “Support to the Enhancement of Lawmaking, Rulemaking and Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA)” Project, organized a seminar on the "Regulatory Impact Assessment as an essential tool for modernization and improvement of the quality of national legislation" on May 14, 2015.

    The results of volunteer work have been presented at the VIII Congress of Pulmonogists and Phthisiatricians

    In the week of 4 May 2015 around 500 medical professionals gathered in Tashkent at the 8th Congress of Pulmonologists and Phthisiatricians of Uzbekistan to discuss the current situation of tuberculosis and especially MDR-TB (multi drug resistant tuberculosis) burden in the area. UN Volunteers (UNV) attended the congress to present the results of ongoing public awareness campaign in Karakalpakstan. The presentation “Prevention of tuberculosis: from old views to new approaches” focused on self-prevention of tuberculosis arising from positive behavioral change and on UN Volunteers’ experience in Karakalpakstan.

    What needs to be done to save the saigas on the Ustyurt Plateau

    The saiga population has declined by 90 per cent for the last twenty years. The saiga is included in the Red Book of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. However, the decrease of saiga population keeps going, together with populations of a number of rare species, such as goitered gazelle, caracal as well as rare birds of prey.

    CCI and UNDP Promote Inclusive Business Models in Uzbekistan

    A round table on discussing the opportunities for cooperation for development of inclusive business projects in Uzbekistan was held on May 5 2015. The main aim of the round table was to encourage companies and other interested parties to identify and support opportunities to include low-income population in value chain and elaborate on ways of implementing them. The event was organized by the UNDP project “Business Forum of Uzbekistan (Phase III)” in collaboration with Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan (CCI).

    Functional review as a tool for organizational change

    It is fundamental that government institutions provide quality public services to their citizens. To ensure this, the ministries must have clearly defined roles and responsibilities, qualified staff with relevant functions, budget and availability of assessing the services offered.     Effective parliamentary control – a key element of democracy

    The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov in his statement at joint session of the Legislative Chamber and Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan on January 23, 2015 emphasized that the work of both houses of the Parliament should be built on a qualitatively new basis on the conduct of parliamentary control of the activities of government bodies, unconditional execution of passed laws, and the most important national programs of socio-economic and socio-political development.

    Towards E-government and E-participation development

    On 27 April – 1 May 2015, international experts from the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) Mr. Richard Kerby and Mr. Vyacheslav Cherkasov, senior advisors on e-government and public administration, will be visiting Uzbekistan. They will meet with high-level officials from key ministries and agencies in order to discuss emerging e-government trends, innovative practices, as well as challenges and opportunities of e-government development. The experts will also conduct a workshop training to raise capacity of government officials to implement, monitor and evaluate policies pertaining to e- government and e- participation development.

    Property Registration in Uzbekistan Made Easier

    Until recently, the sale of commercial property was rather laborious process for both buyers and sellers, due to complicated process of securing rights to property in Uzbekistan. The World Bank’s report “Doing Business 2015” ranked Uzbekistan 143 out of 189 countries on the ease of registering property.

    In Uzbekistan, beekeeping benefits communities and the environment

    Kuralbay Nugmanov, an entrepreneur and farmer in Karakalpakstan, north of Uzbekistan, says his community is much better off since they installed bee hives. “This year we got much better fruits and vegetables, as compared to last year. We believe that this is thanks to our bees,” he says.

    Promoting inclusive social development in Karakalpakstan: We're In It Together

Among other factors lack of access to funds is considered as a major obstacle for establishing business opportunities for people with a disability. Thus, the vast majority of people with a disability are unable to reach their potential, remain dependent on families for support and are denied the opportunity to contribute to the community’s development.

    Exploring the experience of the United States in enhancing transparency of judicial system

    On March 15-22, 2015, nine representatives of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, Supreme Court Research Centre, Ministry of Justice and Supreme Economic Court of Uzbekistan will participate in a study tour to the United States to learn the US experience in enhancing transparency and accessibility of the judicial system. The study tour is organized within the framework of the joint project of UNDP and the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan – “Rule of Law Partnership in Uzbekistan”. The project is co-financed by USAID and UNDP.
