  • UN Resident Coordinator visited Karakalpakstan Oct 14, 2017

    From 12-14 October 2017 Helena Fraser, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan and Olivier Chave, Ambassador of Switzerland in Uzbekistan visited the Republic of Karakalpakstan to familiarize with the current situation in the region and efforts of the Government to prevent the consequences of the environmental crisis; measures for adaptation to the climate change as well as the UN activities in Karakalpakstan. The visit was organized by the UN Joint Programme “Building the resilience of communities affected by the Aral Sea disaster through a Multi-Partner Human Security Fund for the Aral Sea”, funded by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security.

    The Chamber of Commerce and Industry and UNDP ‘Business Forum of Uzbekistan (Phase III)’ project with the support of the Women's Committee, and the Business Women’s Association has been conducting a research examining the barriers women face when starting, running and expanding a business in Uzbekistan. The results of the research will become the basis for a policy brief on stimulating the women entrepreneurship development in the country.

    The raft of reforms under way in Uzbekistan must invest in the promotion and protection of human rights, including freedom of religion or belief, a UN expert has concluded at the end of an official visit to the country.

  • E-SUD as an innovative system of transparent and open justice Sep 28, 2017

    A court order has formally incorporated Uzbekistan’s all 75 civil courts into the national E-SUD system. The system was first developed in 2013, and has been implemented by the joint ‘Rule of Law in Uzbekistan’ project of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

  • UNDP and Goskomecology to Launch a New High-Mountain Ecosystem Sustainability Initiative in Uzbekistan Sep 21, 2017

    The snow leopard, a globally acknowledged symbol of Central Asian mountains, lives in hard-t-reach areas of Uzbekistan. Its habitat – the mountains of Western Tien Shan and Pamir Alai – are highly significant for global biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods but, unfortunately, suffer from multiple serious threats. These, primarily, include continuous pasture and forest degradation caused by unsustainable use of natural resources. The new project of the Government of Uzbekistan and United Nations Development Programme sets ambitious targets to overcome and reduce the impact of these negative factors.

    There is currently a greatly untapped resource of women programmers, who are essential to the understaffed global ICT industry (an estimated 800,000 extra professionals will be needed in Europe by 2020). But women programmers, especially those in management roles, make up a small minority of the world’s IT professionals. The landscape for women programmers is not much different here in Uzbekistan. The share of women in technical universities is only 16-22 percent of the total number of students. Technovation Challenge.
