    Ozone Layer Protection – the Mission Goes On

    Annually on September 16 International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer of the Earth - the date important for the international community is celebrated. This year this event is celebrated under the slogan: Ozone Layer Protection – the Mission Goes On. On September 16 a press-conference dedicated to celebration of the International Ozone Day was held in the Poytakht business center. This event was co-hosted by the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Global Environmental Facility. This event was attended by the officials of the ministries, agencies, public and private sector of Uzbekistan, international organizations, and the media.

    Effective communication: a key to good governance

    Effective communication for collaborative decision making, effective interaction with citizens, making successful public appearances and speeches, confidence building, nonverbal communication and body language were among the main topics addressed and discussed during the Interpersonal and Social Communication Skills Training, organized by UNDP Uzbekistan for city/district khokimiyat officials of Tashkent region. The Training was led by Dr. Alisher Faizullaev, a professional trainer with profound experience in social communication, public speaking and negotiations.

    The first-ever HIV Hotline is launched

    Today, we are launching the first-ever HIV Hotline in Uzbekistan. The Tashkent AIDS Center will provide technical assistance in partnership with a UNDP project working to strengthen national capacities to address emerging challenges in fighting the spread of AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Hotline is symbolically named as ‘Life Line’.

    Aquaculture – Making an Existing Industry Better

    Uzbekistan is lucky to be blessed with some of the key resources needed for fish farming, particularly in its foothill regions that make up 25 per cent of the nation’s countryside, and the potential to streamline and expand the nation’s existing fish farming industry is significant. The raw resources needed to enhance this industry already exists in Uzbekistan, so all that’s needed to make fish farming even stronger is improved national knowledge about the field.

    Diversification of the Spectrum of HIV Prevention Services in Uzbekistan

    One of the significant factors of effectiveness to combat the HIV epidemic is to implement successful prevention practices and programs among most-at-risk populations (MARPs). Today, within the framework of the UNDP ‘Continuing Scale Up of the Response to HIV’ (funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria), a number of HIV prevention services will be made available to MARPs in Uzbekistan.

    UNDP Project to Improve Water Use on Karmana District Farms

    The Zarafshan River Basin is a region with a significant population of 5 million people, and also a large quantity of agricultural land use, but faces significant difficulties in ensuring that the farmers have access to the water they require to maintain their fields. While 84 per cent of the basin’s water resources are used in agriculture, more than 50 per cent of this resource is lost through the use of traditional but inefficient irrigation practices.
