On the 20th of November, 2014, an international seminar on ‘Issues of the Effective Usage of Information-Communication Technologies in Courts’ Activities’ was organised by the UNDP ‘Civil Justice Reform: Effective Court Management’ project and its partners. This meeting developed an approach through which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can be best enhanced into the national justice system.

Violence against women and girls appears all too often in headlines across the world. But along with the cases that make the news are many thousands of other incidents occurring every day, on every continent, and in every country. According to the World Health Organization, gender-based violence kills as many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as does cancer. Its toll on women's health surpasses that of traffic accidents and malaria combined.

One of the environmental projects implemented in our country has received a high appraisal abroad. The manager of the completed UNDP project ‘Achieving Ecosystem Stability on Degraded Land in Karakalpakstan and the Kyzylkum Desert’, Irina Bekmirzaeva has been awarded with an Honorary diploma from the ‘Energy Globe Award’ international Fund.

A roundtable and press conference to launch the annual ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World’ International Action will be held in Tashkent on November 17. The key goal of the events, organized by the UN, national public organizations and interested donors, is to draw public attention to and promote the protection of women’s rights.

From the 27th to the 30th of October, the Assistant Administrator and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS Ms. Cihan Sultanoğlu, visited Uzbekistan. In addition to meeting with national partners, Ms. Sultanoğlu also attended the conference on ‘The development of cooperation in the Aral Sea Basin to mitigate environmental catastrophe’.

Stefan Priesner: Opening Remarks at the Inception Workshop ‘Developing climate resilience of farming communities in the drought prone parts of Uzbekistan’
We have gathered on the occasion of an Inception Workshop, which marks the official launch of our newest climate change adaptation project, which will be implemented jointly with our long-time partner, Uzhydromet. Some three years, in close consultation with our national partners we have started developing this project proposal – we are launching the project today, which also happens to be the largest climate change adaptation initiative to date in Uzbekistan.

UNDP Administrator, Helen Clark has just completed a five-day visit to Uzbekistan, during which she met with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan. HE Islam Karimov, and ministers, met with national and international development partners, and visited important historical sites in Khorezm and Bukhara which are vital to the tourism sector. The visit directed attention to a number of key initiatives and their impact. Helen Clark emphasised the need to always work to scale up initiatives. She was delighted to see the emergence of new opportunities for co-operation in a number of priority areas.

On the last day of her visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark made a key-note presentation to students and professors at Tashkent’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy. Her speech showed her appreciation of Uzbekistan’s continued commitment to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015. It also highlighted the need for continued collaboration and cooperation, in order to guarantee the nation’s positive human development trends persist into the post-2015 era.

UNDP Administrator Helen Clark and Mr. Martin Taschner, Deputy Head of ECHO’s Unit for the European Neighbourhood, Middle East, and Central Asia will visit Tashkent’s Earthquake Simulation Complex at the Institute of Civil Defence in Tashkent City. The facility will serve to build public awareness of Uzbekistan’s vulnerability to seismic events, and educate the public on the best means of preparing for and behaving during earthquakes.

The project is a continuation of extensive work undertaken by UNDP and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, in strengthening the efficiency and accessibility of the nation’s courts, and the population’s access to essential judiciary services.

To review achievements made by UNDP Uzbekistan and to pave the way for future initiatives, UNDP Administrator Ms. Helen Clark will visit national project sites and meet with key national partners in Uzbekistan from the 15th to the 20th of October. Her visit will include meetings with representatives of government partners and a tour to regional project sites.

On the 13th of October, UNDP joined the Ministry of Emergency Situations in hosting a celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR). An inception workshop for the joint project ‘Initial Implementation of Accelerated Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) Phase Out in the Countries with Economies in Transition - Uzbekistan’ took place on the 25th of September. The event was organised by project partners including the State Committee for Nature Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Programme. It was an opportunity to recognise UNDP’s continued efforts in Uzbekistan to limit the nation’s contribution to the depletion of the Ozone Layer, and to discuss plans to ensure this effort is enhanced and sustained.

On the 24th of September, 2014, an official meeting between the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, and the Chairperson of Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, took place at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The meeting was held in order to overview achievements made in strengthening the Rule of Law in Uzbekistan, and to agree on future initiatives in this field.
