UN_Aral_Sea_crisis_eng

Aral Sea – located in the heart of Central Asia, once the world’s fourth largest lake, has now dried up to about 30% of its initial size. This infographic shows the scale of the dramatic environmental change and its negative impact on livelihoods of the people of the region.  The UN Joint Programme focuses on addressing the human security needs of more than 120,000 people in Muynak, Shumanay, and Takhtakupir districts of Karakalpakstan, aiming at establishing adequate governance systems and sound policies, as well as enhancing economic opportunity, education, health care and environmental security. The approach should be able to create positive linkages between multiple sectors and address complex and interconnected challenges.
