This analytical paper discusses various aspects of the strategic planning process. The first chapter provides information about the principles of the strategic planning process in the U.S., the role and participation of NGOs and private sectors in the socio-economic life and regional development of the country, as well as respective governmental structures that are responsible for strategic planning and economic development of regions. The second chapter is devoted to such issues as the development of civil society institutions, the emerging corporate social responsibility, the organization of public participation in the strategic planning processes in Russia. Finally, some conclusions are presented on joint participation in regional strategic planning.
