Gender and Small arms and light weapons in Southeast Europe

Gender and Small arms and light weapons in Southeast Europe

February 28, 2017

Study

The study documents the gender differences in the risks that women and men face in respect to small arms and light weapons (SALW) in South East Europe, providing fresh insights into the numerous ways in which gender and SALW-related behaviors and practices intersect.

By building on this data and taking a tailor-made approach to policy analysis, the study reveals gaps in the prevailing legislative and policy response in SEE which fail to adequately address main gender concerns related to misuse of firearms. The study underlines the necessity of the integration of the gender perspective into SALW legislative and policy frameworks and demonstrates the practical benefits of mainstreaming gender in policy response delivery.

The study was developed with the support of the European Union and is part of a series of knowledge products developed with the aim of strengthening SALW control implementation in SEE.

Toolkit

The practical toolkit is developed to accompany the study Gender and SALW in South East Europe in order to support the recommendations and help introduce the gender perspective in SALW control policy making and implementation. It is designed as a simple, user-friendly aid to policy-makers.
